Title: The Role of the Plant Manager in the Manufacturing Process

Author: Richard Taylor Edwards

Article:
In all areas of the world, the manufacturing process is an
important one. It involves not only things such as electronics,
car parts, and other assembly line products, but also products
that are necessary to sustain life such as food, medicines, and
any other product that must undergo a manufacturing process
before you can use it or consume it. Even heating oil,
electricity, and petroleum for your car must undergo a
manufacturing process before they are ready for use.

Because the manufacturing process is so important in the every
day lives of everyone in the United Kingdom and Europe, the role
of the plant manager is one of great importance. After all, he
must plan and develop the entire manufacturing process, make
sure all the equipment is running right, that the manufacturing
processes are working as they should, and that everyone is doing
the job they are supposed to do. Although the plant manager may
have supervisors or foremen who oversee the actual production of
the products, he will more than likely conduct his own "walk
throughs" since any problems that develop will be his
responsibility. In most manufacturing plants, one can usually
see the plant manager on the floor several times a day making
certain that everything is running smoothly.

The plant manager is also responsible for the entire production
operation, including the assignment of production standards in
order to meet customer demand. It is also his job to make sure
that employees follow health and safety rules including the use
of safety equipment as appropriate. Though the foreman or
supervisor will most likely take care of choosing staff, the
plant manager will determine the need for increases or
decreases. In many companies, he will also have the final word
on terminations, especially in companies that have a labour
union. He may also sit in on employee reviews, and he will
conduct reviews on his staff of foremen and supervisors.

The importance of the manufacturing process is underrated in
most economies with many people not understanding how much of
their daily routines rely on that process. Even within the
manufacturing environment, many of the workers don't have any
idea how important the role of the plant manager really is,
especially those outside of that production environment such as
the office staff and sales staff. For the job seeker looking to
find a job as a plant manager, you must be prepared to wear many
hats during the course of your day and maybe even have to
occasionally fill in when shortages occur with supervision, and
sometimes even on the production line.
